Many times, we all get scared of change. Actually, as humans, on varying levels, we are fundamentally averse to change. So, we are either scared of changing jobs, changing cities, or careers. Let’s face it, we are most times wired to search for that thing that works for us and stick with it like a routine. In the process, we might sometimes get so attached that a slight break in routine might just be enough to make the rest of the day a mess.
This also varies based on our ability to adapt to change and the speed with which we do that. However, change can sometimes be good. Some change come naturally, most especially when such change has been wired to be the next step in our journey. The seemingly difficult ones are the ones that involve us going out of our comfort zones to do new things, trying out a new skill, taking on a new responsibility, and the like.
For instance, while starting my photography journey, I found portrait sessions, or studio sessions as everyone knows them, stressful and boring. This was largely due to my introverted nature and would rather just be behind the camera and click away at an event with everything going spontaneously, as against interacting with and posing with a client. I consoled myself with I am an event photographer and portrait photography is boring and unreal or fake because of the complications with posing. This notion took over 2-3 years to get over as making that change seemed like a big deal.
I mean, there is always the concern about how will it turn out. Will I be good at it? Will I fumble? Or the imposter syndrome that just leaves you feeling you are not qualified.
The shocker however is that, many times, we never know what we are good at until we try it out. We never know how much we can handle until we take on that extra responsibility, or jump on that new task. The people who have done great things or created something new or built something different were all people, who despite the fear of uncertainty that most times comes with change, face their fears and chart out a new path in their journey.
What’s the worst that can happen anyway? Whatever it is, believe me when I say, it can never be as worse as you imagine.
And guess what? YOU WON’T SUCK!
